VW Virtus leads the chart in February 2025 while Honda City comes last
The C-segment sedan space is shrinking with each passing day. Thanks to the growing love for pseudo-SUVs in the Indian market, a majority of buyers no longer find the traditional three-box design appealing. As seen in the latest sales report, three out of five sedans in this segment have recorded negative growth compared to their numbers from the previous year. One model out of the two positively growing sedans is set to be discontinued.
Yes, you heard that right. This segment will soon have one less contender as Maruti has decided to pull the plug on the Ciaz. Despite being the third highest-selling sedan in the segment, its sales surge could largely be attributed to heavy discounts and stock clearance measures by the carmaker.
Leading the C-segment sedan sales in February 2025 is the Volkswagen Virtus, with 1837 units sold, marking a 13% year-on-year growth. The second spot goes to the Hyundai Verna, which found 1207 buyers but witnessed a sharp decline of 28% compared to the previous year.
The Maruti Ciaz secured the third position with 1097 units sold, boasting an impressive 128% growth. Surprisingly, the Skoda Slavia slipped to the fourth spot, with only 901 units dispatched, reflecting a 12% decline. The Honda City ranked last in the segment, selling just 889 units and recording a 25% degrowth.
It will be interesting to see how this segment evolves once the Maruti Ciaz is discontinued. Where will its buyers go? Will they opt for its Japanese cousin, the Honda City? The Korean rival, Hyundai Verna? Or will they turn to the new German contenders, the VW Virtus and Skoda Slavia? Only time will tell.
